Tradition and Individual talent

Tradition and Individual talent

Ø   T.S. Eliot’s Tradition and Individual Talent was published in 1919 in the Egoist-The Times literary supplements.
Ø    This essay described by David Lodge as the most celebrated critical essay in English of 20th century.

Ø Concept of Tradition
Ø       Theory of denationalization.

Ø       Tradition has a Three-fold  significance

1)      Tradition cannot be inherited and involves a great deal of labour and learning.
2)      It involves appreciation not only of the pastness of past, but also of its presence.
Ø   Eliot’s conception f history is a dynamic one and not static; and is forever in state of flux.

Ø  Tradition is a matter of much wider significance. It cannot be inherited and if you want it you must obtain it by great labour.
Ø  Eliot gives importance to the interdependence of past and the present.
Ø  To be traditional in Eliot’s sense means to be conscious of the main current of art and poetry.
Ø  Poet must be quite aware of the obvious fact that art never improves, but that is never quite same.
