blog on T.S.Eliot and The waste land.

This blog is a part of classroom activities

(1)  We can not compare Eliot and Nietzche because they are right on their place.
Nietzche is not beliving in God and any Supernatural power. He believe on man’s power like superman. He like an  atheist. According to Nietzche traditional value are like ‘ Slave morality’. The Ubermensch’.
Where as Eliot tries to find out the solution in past like traditional values can be evoke the Waste lander .  He uses many mythical   reference from difficult culture.
Nietzche ‘s cocept is very good but we cannot refuse Eliot’s  concept because old philosophical idea which recalled by Eliot was bring a change in society once a time.

(2) yes, it is true that giving free vent to the repressed ‘primitive instinct’ lead us to happy and satisfied life .But on the individual cannot make society happy surely. As Matthew Arnold says in culture and Anarchy that ‘Do as one like may bring chaos in society. But Eliot tries to says that tradition can bring stable life which is not completely true.

 (3)  In the Waste land Eliot discuss about spiritual degradation and sexual perversion. After that he tries to find out the solution from Buddhism and Upnishadas. The 5the part is ‘What the thunder said’  it means Akashwani.
Ganga was sunken, and the limp leaves
Waited for rain, while the black clouds

                           Gathered far distant, over Himavant.

The jungle crouched, humped in silence.
                          Then spoke the thunder”

He uses many things like Ganga, Prajapati, shinati etc. he also uses three Da.

             Da: Datta: giver
              Da: Dayadhvam: compassion
              Da: Damyata: self-cantrol
At last he use the word Shantih from three times. Which suggest The peace which passeth understanding'. It is from Upnishdas.
                  Shantih    shantih    shantih
