To the lighthouse

This blog is part of the academic activity done in the class.

1)   How can you explain that 'what' Virginia Woolf wanted to say (for example, the complexity of human relationship, the everyday battles that people are at in their relationship with near and dear ones, the struggle of a female artist against the values of middle/upper class society etc) can only be said in the way she has said? (Key: The 'How' of the narrative technique is to be discussed along with features of Stream of Consciousness technique which helps Woolf to put in effective manner what she experienced in abstractions.)

Virginia Woolf, tries to disclose the human retaliations and situation women in male dominated society and especially in upper-middle class. For example Mrs.Ramsay is  ideal from the[respective of male dominated society  on the other hand from the perspective of Lily Brisco she is in golden cage ,she don’t have her individual identity. And just because she is housewife he didn’t get much importance in society and in family also.  She tries to become pool between father and son.

2)    Do you agree: "The novel is both the tribute and critique of Mrs. Ramsay"?

Yes, i agree. This novel is tribute to Mrs.R and critique also.

[1.1]  I found that at some point she also think in a patriarchal  point of view  like she also sees Lily Brisco like she is not ideal women. Mrs.R  is more taking care of her son more than her daughter.
[1.2] on the other side it is a tribute also, like the painting of summer house is not completed without Mrs.R. the other thing is that she is bridge  between family members.

So the conclusion is that she is ideal women from the perspective of male dominated society but not from the modern perspective.

3)   Considering symbolically, does the Lighthouse stand for Mrs. Ramsay or the narrator.

‘To the lighthouse’ is significant title. It stands for both Mrs.R and Lily Brisco.
My view are...
Mrs.R is lighthouse for the family. She is ideal women tacking care of husband, children and guest. She is very good hostess. She knows how to pamper the male ego.
Lily Brisco is lighthouse for the women who think out of the box and have kind of rebellious thoughts.
But  at the end it is all are narrators’ thoughts, that is Virginia Woolf who is in a way real lighthouse.

4)   What do you understand by the German term 'Künstlerroman'? How can you justify that 'To The Lighthouse' is 'Künstlerroman' novel?

With the help of Wikipedia  i found the easy meaning if this term that is  such a work, usually a novel, tends to depict the conflicts of a sensitive youth against the values of a middle and upper class society of individual’s  time. Here we can clearl see that this term is used for the Lily Brisco and it completely justifies the title “To the lighthouse”
