The many historical events are there in the film like partitions of India and Pakistan, new birth of Bangladesh in 1971, emergency of 1975 in India by Indira Gandhi. This all are historical events we can say in a background, but a film is about the two boys Saleem Sinai and Shiva. They both are born on ecxet
moment 14th August 1947 at midnight when India get freedom. So in a similar way by their religion they suggest the birth of two nation India and Pakistan. But the thing is their fates were changed by one Christian nurse Mary, because she change them for personal motive.
We came find that the plot is complex and in a fragments and make us confuse. It is not easy to understand. So that the movie is quite borrow.
If we see from the postcolonial context many aspects are beautifully adopted by Deepa Maheta.
(1) Mary-the nurse has a colonial and herself as superior kind of mentality.
(2) A school teacher who considered white man as a civilised.
(3) Vanita who exploited by one white man.
The other thing is about their parentage , identity crisis. They both are not aware about their biological parents. Which reflects when Saleem says that " I, had many families and I had no families"
The historical speeches of Naheru about freedom and Indira Gandhi's on Emergency is put here as it is.
If we see this movie a from academic purpose than it goes very well with novel but the entertainment viewers can't watch it. Good for academic purpose not for entertainment.
