The swamp dwellers Wole Soynika

Image
The swamp dwellers Wole Soynika The Swamp Dwellers   focuses on the struggle between the old and the new ways of life in   Africa. It also gives us a picture of the cohesion that existed between the individual and southern Nigerian society. The conflict between tradition and modernity is also reflected in the play. The play mirrors the socio-cultural pattern, the pang and the sufferings of the swamp dwellers and underlines the need for absorbing new ideas. The struggle between human beings and unfavourable forces of nature is also captured in the play. Soyinka presents us the picture of modernAfrica   where the wind of change started blowing.        The Swamp Dwellers   is a close study of the pattern of life in the isolated hamlets of the African countryside as well as an existential study of the simple folk who face rigours of life without any hope or succour. Waiting for Barbarians by J.M. Coetzee

Image
The narrator, the Magistrate, administrates a town on the frontier of an unnamed empire. He looks forward to a quiet retirement and spends some of his free time excavating the site of an old town buried in the dunes, where he has found a cache of wooden slips covered with mysterious writing. Colonel Joll travels to the Magistrate’s town from the imperial capital to investigate attacks by indigenous people whom the empire calls “barbarians.” Joll interrogates and tortures two prisoners captured on the road, a boy and his grandfather. After killing the grandfather, he continues the torture until the boy confesses that his people, the barbarians, are preparing an attack against the empire. Troubled by these acts of torture and skeptical about the barbarian threat, the Magistrate gives Joll supplies, men, and horses to conduct a raid on the nomadic barbarians. Joll returns with more prisoners, whom he interrogates over five days. The Magistrate spends his nights with a prostitute, ...

Tom Jones by Henry Fielding

Image
Tom Jones is very long novel by Henry Fielding. Here i am talking about only themes rather than plot. ·          Virtue as action rather than thought ·          The tension between art and artifice ·          The impossibility of stereotypical categorization   1. Virtue as action rather than thought     Fielding contrasts the concept of Virtue espoused by characters like Square and Thwackum with the Virtue actually practiced by Jones and   Allworthy .   Tom , as the active hero who saves damsels-in-distress and plans on fighting for his country, is the embodiment of the very active type of Virtue that Fielding esteems 2. The tension between art and artifice   Although the narrator upholds the value of natural art in his characters, he uses artifice himself in the construction of his novel. For...

He tells them of a dream he has had in which all animals live together with no human beings to oppress or control them. He tells the animals that they must work toward such a paradise and teaches them a song called “Beasts of England,” in which his dream vision is lyrically described. The animals greet Major’s vision with great enthusiasm. When he dies only three nights after the meeting, three younger pigs— Snowball ,   Napoleon , and   Squealer —formulate his main principles into a philosophy called Animalism. Late one night, the animals manage to defeat the farmer Mr. Jones in a battle, running him off the land. They rename the property Animal Farm and dedicate themselves to achieving Major’s dream. The cart-horse   Boxer   devotes himself to the cause with particular zeal, committing his great strength t...

Sense of ending by Julia Barnes

Image
Sense of ending   by Julia Barnes   The phrase 'Blood Money' can have meanings like, relationship with Sarah caused Adrian's suicide. And her money is given to Tony. Their relationship damages young Adrian's life so it can be called Blood Money and Tony is cause of all damages so Veronica call his (given) money as 'Blood Money'. # The equation Means b =baby or young Adrian, s = Sarah, V= Veronica, a= Adrian. b = s – v x/+ a1 means, Young Adrian, b is a result of Sarah's relationship with Adrian (x/+) with breaking relationship with Veronica (-). a2 + v + a1 X s = b?  a2 means Anthony ( Adrian used to address Tony as Anthony) It says relationship of Tony with Veronica, and her relationship with Adrian. And Adrian and Sarah's relationship multiplies b means gave birth to baby or young Adrian.   # Here I try to discuss something about novel 'The Sense of an Ending ' by Julian Barnes. Here if we think about title then it is so...
